Privacy Policies 101: What You Should Know

Your website privacy policy lets visitors to your website know about the type of information you may be collecting from them, how you are using that data, and how they can contact you to discuss privacy issues. This builds trust with your visitors that their information will be protected by you and not misused.

There are two big issues that website visitors want to know about that should be disclosed in your privacy policy:

1. What type of information do you collect on visitors.
2. What do you do with the data that you do collect.

Privacy policies are moving away from an opt-out mechanism to permission-based (informed consent) collection of visitor data. For now, have your Internet lawyer draft in plain language exactly what you’re collecting and what you’re doing with it. When the laws do change, it will simply be a matter of providing an incentive (“carrot”) for visitors to opt-in so you can continue to collect the data.

When in doubt, apply the Golden Rule to your data collection policies. If you wouldn’t want your data misused in a certain way, don’t expect others to want to put up with it either. When you respect your visitor’s data, you build trust…and trust increases sales. That’s a win-win.
