Website Privacy Policy Changes: Facebook and Transparency

A couple of months ago Facebook faced outrage by its users because of changes to its website privacy policy that were hostile to both privacy and intellectual property rights. Sensing an opportunity to regulate, government entities stepped in to investigate Facebook. Responding to the Canadian government’s concerns, Facebook is going to strengthen its privacy policies. Expected changes include:
- Having its users focus on its website privacy policy terms and select options for their profiles based on how much data they want to protect from the general public as opposed to Facebook friends.
- Moving to an informed consent model for third party applications where users are clearly informed about the type of data to be collected and how it will be shared before making a decision to use the third party applications.
- In addition, a user’s consent given for a third party application can be restricted to limit the amount of information about that user’s Facebook friends the application can extract.
In short, the changes are a move to permission-based marketing based on informed consent.
