Internet Privacy: Facebook Dumps Beacon Tracking Tool

Facebook learned a tough lesson with its Beacon tracking tool because it allowed tracking of your activities on other websites and disclosure of that information to your Facebook friends. For example, if you bought something that might embarrass you if publicly known, Beacon could track the purchase and let others know you made the purchase.

To settle a privacy lawsuit about this issue, Facebook is setting up a foundation that promotes online privacy. Note that Beacon’s successor, Facebook Connect, provides users with the power to make informed decisions regarding privacy and tracking.
