Privacy Policy: Congress May Radically Change Internet Advertising

The Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Communications, Technology and the Internet is writing a Web privacy bill that should have broad bipartisan support because it curbs many of the privacy abuses in Internet advertising. If enacted into law, expect the bill to do three things for website privacy policy.
1. Transparency. Website owners and advertisers will have to prominently disclose what type of information they collect and how that information will be used.
2. Opt-out. For non-sensitive data, website visitors will be given the opportunity to opt-out of having the data collected.
3. Opt-in. For sensitive data (private info that could be used to embarrass you or even steal your identity), unless you expressly opt in to having the data collected, website owners and advertisers will not be able to collect or use this type of data.
